MOON PROPERTY: THE LUNAR ALPSLocated almost directly at the "top" of the moon when viewed from Earth, the Lunar Alps ("Montes Alpes" in Latin) are situated in the north-central section of Luna. The spectacular Lunar Alps comprise a chain of mountains that stretches about 250 kilometers in length, bridging the northern Sea of Cold (Mare Frigoris) and the Sea of Rains (Mare Imbrium) to the sorth. The towering peaks that make up the Alps reach heights from 1,800 to 2,400 meters. While visitors from Earth have not previously explored the more northern regions of the moon, several expeditions have landed nearby, including Russia's unmanned Luna 2, which was the first probe to reach the moon when it surveyed Sinus Lunicus in 1959, and Luna 17 (1970), which touched down south of the Bay of Rainbows ("Sinus Iridum"). |
