MOON PROPERTY: SEA OF CLOUDSThe southernmost of the major lunar seas, Mare Nubium ("Sea of Clouds" in English) is an exotic region that features some of the moon's most interesting terrain. Located just west of the moon's north-south polar axis in the heart of the lunar southern hemisphere, Nubium is generally visible above distinctive Crater Tycho when viewed from Earth. The Nubium basin, which encompasses more than 250,000 square kilometers, is mostly flat but is covered by many low, rolling hills known as dorsum ("wrinkle ridges") in lunar parlance. To date, exploration of the Nubium region has been minimal. The nearest expedition was Ranger 7 (1964), the first unmanned U.S. mission to the Moon. Ranger 7 sent back more than 4,300 images of the lunar surface before crash-landing north of Nubium in the Mare Cognitum. |
