MOON PROPERTY: EASTERN SEAMare Orientale ("Eastern Sea" in English) is among the most interesting and notable of the moon's regions. The Orientale basin is one of the moon's smaller seas, encompassing only about 300 kilometers in diameter, and is also one of the youngest of the lunar mare. Orientale is surrounded by a ring of mountains – the Montes Rook – that is bounded by a relatively flat circle of land, and then another ring of mountains, the Montes Cordillera. To the west of Orientale is the vast far side of the Moon, its surface covered with thousands of craters and few of the broad mare regions so common on the lunar face. Exploration of the Orientale region has been limited to satellite photos, in particular the series taken by Lunar Orbiter 4 in 1967. No missions have visited Orientale to date. |
