BAY OF RAINBOWS
The Bay of Rainbows ("Sinus Iridum" in Latin) is a beautiful and distinctive semi-circle of land located in the northwestern quadrant of the moon. Among the prominent features of this region is the "horseshoe" of the Bay of Rainbows, which is formed by the Lunar Ural Mountains ("Montes Jura"). About 260 kilometers across at its widest point, the Bay is believed to be the remains of what was once a large crater.
Slightly northwest in the Montes Jura is the dramatic Crater Bianchini (near the center of the lower photo), a 38 kilometer-wide bowl named for the eminent Italian astronomer Francesco Bianchini (1662-1729).
