MOON PROPERTY: SEA OF SERENITY
The Sea of Serenity ("Mare Serenitatis" in Latin) is the sixth largest of the lunar seas, encompassing more than 300,000 square kilometers in the northeastern quadrant of the Moon. Among the more prominent features located in this region is the crescent-shaped Crater le Monnier (near the center of the lower photo), a 60-kilometer-wide crater named for the French astronomer and physicist Pierre Charles le Monnier, who pioneered the development of instruments used to study, map and explore the universe.
At the mouth of le Monnier is the landing site of Luna 21, an unmanned mobile laboratory sent to the Moon in January 1973 by the Soviet Union. Luna 21 was the next-to-last mission to the moon in the 20th Century, followed only by the Luna 24 expedition in August 1976.
