OCEAN OF STORMS
The largest of the lunar seas, Oceanus Procellarum ("Ocean of Storms" in English) stretches over nearly one-sixth of the moon's near side. Procellarum spans from the polar north through the equatorial region, or virtually the entire western section of the moon. Two distinct craters, Billy (50 kilometers in diameter) and Hansteen (49 km), are tucked away on the southern edge.
Slightly farther north across Procellarum's southern plains is Crater Flamsteed (20 km), with the landing site of the early unmanned Surveyor 1 (May 1966) mission about 100 kilometers to its northeast. Surveyor 1 marked the first successful soft landing of an American exploratory craft on the Moon.
