MOON PROPERTY: SEA OF VAPORSThe Sea of Vapors ("Mare Vaporum" in Latin) is a magnificent expanse of territory located in the northeastern quadrant of the moon. The most distinguishing feature in this region is the dramatic Crater Manilius (near the center of the lower photo), a 40 kilometer-wide bowl named for the ancient astronomer who authored the epic "Astronomicon" back in the first century. It was the first published work to describe the most prominent constellations. Across Manilius is Lacus Lenitatis ("Lake of Tenderness" in English), while the Montes Haemus lunar mountain range lies to the north. The rugged terrain to the south includes a variety of interesting features, including the craters Boscovich, Julius Caesar, Agrippa and Godin, and the shallow rilles and valleys (called "rimae") Hyginus, Ariadaeus and Triesnecker. |
